Lessons in preparation

Suggested ages 9–10

Finding the right starting point

Check loops, simple conditions and a small structured table.

Use a short, low-pressure conversation or task. If a skill is unfamiliar, provide a simpler example before moving on.

  1. 1Networks and the webPlanned

    Learning goals

    • Distinguish a device network from the internet
    • Explain the difference between the web and the internet
    • Recognise consent and privacy in sharing scenarios

Planned application: Make a model of a message travelling between devices

This is a curriculum outline, not a released video or activity.

  2. 2Variables and statePlanned

    Learning goals

    • Use a variable to store a score
    • Predict how a variable changes after instructions
    • Use selection to respond to a value

Planned application: Build a scorekeeping mini game with test cases

This is a curriculum outline, not a released video or activity.

  3. 3Loops and decompositionPlanned

    Learning goals

    • Split a task into smaller reusable parts
    • Use counted loops for repeated patterns
    • Debug a nested action sequence

Planned application: Create a reusable shape-drawing routine

This is a curriculum outline, not a released video or activity.

  4. 4Data and representationsPlanned

    Learning goals

    • Explain how a code can represent symbols
    • Use a simple binary on-off model
    • Identify inconsistent entries in a table

Planned application: Encode a small pixel picture and explain its representation

This is a curriculum outline, not a released video or activity.

  5. 5Digital publishingPlanned

    Learning goals

    • Organise a page with headings and useful links
    • Write image descriptions for accessibility
    • Distinguish original work from licensed reuse

Planned application: Create a private topic webpage using a safe template

This is a curriculum outline, not a released video or activity.

  6. 6Build and evaluatePlanned

    Learning goals

    • Define user needs and success criteria
    • Combine a variable loop and condition
    • Use feedback to improve usability

Planned application: Build a quiz that explains answers rather than only scoring

This is a curriculum outline, not a released video or activity.

AN IDEA TO TRY TOGETHER

Think like a programmer

Write three instructions for drawing a square. Ask someone to follow them exactly. Where did they need more information? Change one instruction and test again. No device is needed for this example.

Notice.
Try.
Explain.

Some planned activities are unplugged; coding tasks may need a keyboard or a suitable browser. Requirements will be stated with each released lesson.

Questions parents ask

What can my child use today?

The Computing & Coding page currently presents the learning plan. Videos, exercises and games for this subject are in preparation. You can try the free mathematics lessons today.

Is this a full school curriculum?

No. These are supplementary learning programmes, not a school qualification or a claim of complete alignment with any national curriculum. Families can use the grade plans alongside school learning.

How do I choose a grade?

Use the grade and age range as a guide, then check the starting skills. English reading and listening confidence may affect the support your child needs. Grade 9 is a transition level and is not called middle school everywhere.

Will lessons work on a phone?

The learning plans are designed for phone, tablet and desktop viewing. Materials, keyboard access or adult support needed for a future activity will be stated when that activity is released.

One membership. Five core subjects.

Explore launch plans for your child’s selected grade: $30 USD for one month, $150 for six months or $240 for one year. Paid enrolment is not yet open.
